What Is Racial Harassment? Racial Harassment can occur anywhere, it can happen in the street, at work, in schools, even to people in their own homes. It can take the form of name-calling, threats, damage to property and even physical violence. It can leave people feeling terrified, confused, upset or powerless.
What Is A Racial Incident? A racial incident is defined in the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry as: “any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person”
What To Do If You Have Been Racially Harassed There is never an excuse for racial harassment. No one should have to put up with it. If it is ignored those responsible are likely to carry on abusing other people. These are some things you can do to reduce the risk of harassment. | | • | Report any racial incidents to BCHA and the Police. | | | • | If you receive nuisance telephone calls, ask the operator about having calls monitored and ask for an ex-directory number | | | • | If stones are thrown at windows, pull the curtains to stop flying glass. Don’t go out to investigate: phone 999 and ask for the police | | | • | Write down the time and date of the incident and the names and addresses of the perpetrator(s)
