If you are having difficulties with your neighbour, often the simplest way to resolve problems is to try to sort it out between yourselves first. Sometimes people are unaware they are causing a nuisance. A friendly word may be enough to sort the problem out and stop a minor disagreement turning into a major dispute. Here are some useful tips on how to deal with the problem yourself .
Think before you speak with the person causing the problem | | Think about what you want to say | | | Be clear about what the problem is and how it is affecting you. | | | Try and choose a good moment. | | | Dont stray from the point. | | | Talk to someone else for example a friend or a member of BCHA staff before you approach the person. |
Useful tips when speaking to the person causing the problem | | Stay calm and friendly being aggressive will not help the situation. | | | Explain what the problem is and how it is affecting you. | | | Listen to the person causing the problem and do not interrupt them when they speak to you. | | | Try not to shout even if the other person does! Stay in control | | | Having listened to each other try to reach an agreement you can both live with. Be reasonable and tolerant. | | | If the person you are speaking with is unreasonable leave the discussion. |
